Psychological Assessments

Martinette has extensive experience in the field of Clinical Psychometrics and integrating assessment results to better understand each client’s needs, difficulties, strengths, motives, values, preferences and areas for development. She was a lecturer in Psychometrics for Masters students in Clinical Psychology, a consultant trainer for a Psychometric test publishing organization in South Africa and held the position of quality control of Clinical Psychometrics for a nuclear power facility in Cape Town. She has assessed more than 200 employees working in high-risk occupations, such as aviation and nuclear power. She also worked in a school environment where she assessed the cognitive, neurodevelopmental and emotional needs of primary school children. She uses a wide variety of psychometric tests and completed accreditation training for the following assessments:

  • Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, 2nd Edition (ADOS-2)
  • Griffiths Scales of Child Development, 3rd Edition (Griffits-III)
  • Murphy-Meisgeier Type Indicator for Children (MMTIC)
  • Emotional Quotient Inventory 2.0 (EQ-i 2.0)
  • Hogan Assessment Suite (includes HPI, HDS, MVPI)
  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI® – Step I & II)

As adults, we can develop and change our opinions. In childhood, we establish the truth of our hearts.” – Sherry Turkle

Therapy

Martinette completed training in several psychotherapies, including the following:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy
  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Sequentially Planned Integrative Counselling for Children (SPICC Model)
  • Person-Centered Therapy
  • Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change
  • Narrative Therapy
  • Gestalt Therapy
  • Clinical Hypnotherapy
  • Transactional Analysis

Being competent in these different therapies means that she can look beyond the perspective of a single-school approach, being open-minded to adjust therapy to each client’s needs. The flexibility of an integrative approach to psychotherapy (rather than a purist approach) is also culturally more sensitive in a country with a diverse population.

Martinette works with all age groups, from young children to mature adults. She enjoys being creative and using playful approaches to engage young children in therapy, while involving parents in the therapeutic process.

Parenting Support

The family is the primary context in which children develop and for this reason, parenting support is an important component of Martinette’s work with children. Through doing a thorough assessment of each child’s emotional needs, she aims to help parents understand the underlying factors that may drive their child’s behaviour and then assisting parents in how to best respond to these needs.

A happy childhood is one of the best gifts that parents have in their power to bestow. The best thing you can give children, next to good habits, are good memories.” – Mary Cholmondeley
